About Peer Support British Columbia

We believe in the transformative power of peer support.

Peer support is emotional and practical support between two people who share a common experience, such as addictions or mental health challenges. A Peer Supporter has lived through that similar experience and is trained to support others.

Peer Support British Columbia also offers Peer Supporter for Family as well.

The Standards of Practice for addiction and mental health peer supporters were developed in consultation with peer supporters from across the province and endorsed by peer leaders representing interests province wide. The national Standards of Practice consist of the knowledge, competencies, experience, and code of conduct requirements to effectively provide peer support services with due care and skill in a variety of settings.

OUR VISION

We envision a world where all individuals have access to the informed services and supports in seeking help for their substance use health without stigma or discrimination.

OUR MISSION

Through advocacy, education, and compassion, PSBC will:

Improve the professional and community care services available to persons impacted by SUD, through approaches and practices that are informed by people with lived/living experience.

Improve accessibility to services and support by helping stigma for people with lived/living experience.

Advocate and educate stakeholder within the health, social services and community safety sectors, at the national, provincial and local levels, on the issues of importance for persons seeking substance use health.

Develop and deliver education and support services for organizations and individuals to create more resilient and inclusive cultures, that reduce stigma and support substance use health, through tailored training and products.

Stigma

Stigma is best understood as a deeply held set of false beliefs about a group of people with at least one attribute in common. This allows the judgement, oppression and discrimination of those people to take place. This is done by either overt actions or silent complicity with those actions.

Peer Support British Columbia acknowledges that inspiration brought by individuals with lived/living experience with substance use health including their families, friends, and allies is an important part of people’s journeys to health. Bringing those experiences through their journey to public awareness and connecting with our community is part of breaking down stigma and ending discrimination. Come be inspired with us.

PEER SUPPORT

All People, All Pathways™ is the foundational concept of our group. Honouring your journey and your destination and recognizing that there are many ways to increased wellness and many people will walk on different paths. The purpose of our peer program is to provide a safe and aware environment for those seeking help to question their relationship with substances, free from stigma or discrimination. Peer Support British Columbia believes that you will find your answers and the best path for you and your goals for increased wellness. Our peer program is inclusive of all individuals in or seeking increased health in their relationship with substances.

Peer Support British Columbia is a wonderful group, which offers an excellent reflection and sharing opportunity, and a very supportive space. They look at substance use very objectively, which I think is necessary for anyone struggling with these kinds of patterns of using substances, or anyone who feels like there is something on their mind they need to understand.

There’s a lot of feedback cycles that can occur when you slip into these behaviours, and if you aren’t able to frame these feedback loops in a healthy and objective manner it can drive you back into those behaviours, starting the cycle again.

If I was faced with these thought patterns again, I know they would be willing to investigate it with me and reframe it in a way that leads to learning. This openness and objectivity would be helpful for anyone facing this kind of thing, so I would recommend it to anyone who finds themselves faced with this kind of pattern of constantly looking for a solution outside of themselves.”
